Project Summary

As an accredited museum, Almond Valley Heritage Trust works with West Lothian Council to provide a museum service for the people of West Lothian and its shale oil industry collection is recognised as being of National Significance. In order to engage with a younger audience Almond Valley Heritage trust applied for funding towards a 'discovery space' which will allow children to learn about the oil shale industry through play.

The project will create a highly innovative outdoor recreation space that will immerse children in a lost industrial world of West Lothian's historic shale oil industry. Alongside their families, children will explore the passageways and pipelines of a traditional oil works and, through active and imaginative forms of play, gain insight into an industry that once shaped life in most rural parts of the county.
